I am a 65 year old single woman who loves to travel. I was an international school educator before I retired in 2020. I’ve lived in seven countries (France, Germany, Spain, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, US), starting at the age of two and consider myself to be a third culture kid/global nomad. Although I am an American citizen originally from southern California, I had not lived in the US for 35 years when I accepted my last professional posting in Atlanta, GA in 2014. I arrived in the South, at the end of Obama’s presidency, during the Trump/Clinton campaign. Quite the culture shock! I love to read, cook, drink wine and connect with my friends and family. I have two kids (26 and 28). One lives in CA and one in Berlin.
I usually travel solo and I like my creature comforts, but I’m also on a pretty tight budget. When I am going to a new place, I look for the cheapest lodging where I can have a private room and bathroom close to the area I most want to visit, without too many stairs. I usually eat out one meal a day and choose restaurants/cafes that have some other customers (preferably locals) but I never wait in line for a table. When I travel by car, I bring my own teapot and kettle because although I consider myself to be pretty flexible, an ideal day starts with a long relaxing morning drinking Twinnings Earl Grey tea as I plan my day or take care of business/communication. When I travel by plane/train/bus, I pack as lightly as possible (considering I’m carrying a CPAP machine for sleep apnea). Currently that means one carry-on sized roller bag and a daypack.
I’m interested in most things (at least enough to enjoy learning about it for an afternoon) but I retain few details. When I get to a new place, I usually visit the top museums and wander the streets popping into any buildings that are impressive. When I’m in a natural setting, I try to get to a place with a great view (preferably a cafe with comfortable seating) and then sit and read and enjoy. If getting there requires strenuous physical effort, I probably skip it. If you’re interested in hearing about my adventures, I hope you’ll follow this blog!
